MMIG PARENTAGE AND IDENTIFICATION
Benefits of a DNA-based parent verification system:
· Reproducible and cost effective with high accuracy
· High discriminatory power (even in multi-sire situations)
· Ease of collecting and storing samples
· Can be used at any time in an animals life (even at birth)
· Complements other DNA tests
· High throughput analysis
Applications
MMI Genomics has made a major impact on the use of parent verification in the beef industry by creating novel uses for our parent verification services. These services have provided the added value of genetic information that is captured by breeders or producers in the beef production system. Following are some examples of how beef customers are currently use our parent verification products:
Breed Associations
Cattle breed associations that are accustomed to verifying the pedigrees for certain categories of animals are major clients for MMI Genomics. We have helped many associations realize the benefits of a DNA-based parent verification system and have helped transition their registries from blood typing to DNA typing. MMI Genomics’ breed association customers include:
· American Angus Association
· North American Limousin Foundation
· Red Angus Association of America
· American Salers Association
· American Bucking Bull Inc.
Multi-Sire Testing for Seedstock Producers
MMI Genomics has utilized our DNA testing program for many seedstock breeders where it is difficult to run single sire pastures. We are able to identify the correct sire for each calf in a multi-sire breeding program without requiring a sample of the dam. This program has provided many benefits to our seedstock customers including:
· Fewer open cows.
· Manage seedstock herds in a commercial setting.
· Efficient pasture management.
· Determine service capacity for each bull.
· Added value for DNA sire validated animals at sale.
· Shorter calving season results in selling more uniform calves.
· Allows cleanup bulls to be turned out immediately after
· Artificial Insemination
· Multi-Sire Testing for Commercial Producers.
MMI Genomics has worked with several commercial producers in the identification of problem bulls within their herds. In most cases, the service has been used to identify bulls that have a genetic defect that is passed along to a proportion of the progeny or to identify the bulls that are producing large birth weight calves. This service is economical to commercial producers because they do not need to type every calf in their herd.
With the introduction of our cattle sampling cards, we made the sample collection process easier, convenient and more reliable than ever before. A single drop of blood is blotted onto the sampling card and the sample is ready for storage or shipment and analysis. Our cards require no special handling; they can be stored at ambient temperature and shipped by regular mail. MMI Genomics DNA typing program employs a globally standardized panel of DNA microsatellite markers (STRs), specifically selected for this purpose by the International Society of Animal Genetics (ISAG). MMIG HOMOZYGOUS BLACK
MMIG Homozygous Black test enables animal breeders to determine the genetics of coat color for the tested animal. Currently, in the cattle marketplace premiums are given to black hided animals. Therefore, determining that a breeding animal is homozygous black can create significant added value.
MMIG Homozygous Black tests for three different conditions:
· Homozygous Black The animal will always pass on a black gene
· to its progeny.
· Heterozygous Black/Red Carrier Although the animal is black-hided
· it may pass on a red gene to its progeny
· Heterozygous Black/Wild Type Carrier Although this animal is also
· black-hided it may pass on the wild type gene to its progeny. Progeny
· receiving one copy of the wild type gene will exhibit the color of the
· gene inherited from the other parent
The price for MMIG Homozygous Black is $35.00 per sample. To order a test kit contact us. Discount pricing may be obtained through the following breed associations.
· American Angus Association
· North American
Limousin
Foundation
· American Salers Association
