Today over one billion people in the world are malnourished while the world adds the equivalent of China 's population every 10 years. It is expected that the global population will double by 2050.

Urbanization has reduced farmland in the United States by nearly 50% over the last 30 years and the environment has been further contaminated with the use of pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics and hormones.

Agricultural productivity increases at the rate of less than one percent per year while population growth exceeds 1.5%.
